What Are The Steps if I Want to Order a Website?

Building a website requires planning and careful thought to be successful. Following is a simple five-step procedure which will guide you through the process. I would be happy to help you at each step in the process.

Step One: Gather and Organize Your Content

The most important step in building a website is to gather and organize your content. You will need to think through the information you want to present to your visitors. What information is critical? What is secondary?

Generally speaking, when you are starting your site, it is best to focus on the essential information you want to communicate to your visitors. Then, over time, you can add additional pages and information. This has the added bonus of keeping the content on your site fresh, which Google and other search engines value in their rankings.

Generally, your website’s content will be divided into text content, images and artwork, tables of information, videos and forms. Great images really boost the visual appeal of your site. Think about what photos might look good on your site. For example, photos of your products, staff, location and client projects all help your visitors visually relate to your site. A good picture is really worth a thousand words in web design.

In addition, content that provides a personal link between your visitors and your company is always valuable. Make your visitors feel like they know your business or organization on the first visit.

Once you have decided what information you want to include on your site, think about how you want to divide this information into the pages of your site.

Next, think through the navigation of your site. What information will be on your home (front) page and how will your visitors access other pages?

For many sites, this will be easy and obvious but it’s still valuable to think through how your visitors will navigate the content on your site. If you are planning to add more content over time, how will this new content be integrated into the existing site?

Step Two: Select Your Website Template

Browse through the available website templates designed specifically for small companies. Choose the one that best appeals to you. Browsing through the design samples is a great way to think about the visual layout of your page.  Review available templates ->

Step Three: Submit Your Request for Website Setup

Complete the Order Your Website form on my Contact page and I’ll get the process going. I will contact you promptly to discuss your website and schedule its installation and setup. I will also let you know how to complete your payment through Paypal.  Find Order Your Website Form Here ->

Step Four: Sign Up for Website Hosting and Domain Registration

At this point, you will need a hosting account and a domain name. The domain name is included in your package, but we will need to discuss the name you are considering before I register it.  You will let me know what names you are interested in and I will research availability and come back to you with that name or, if it is not available, two or three alternatives to present to you. Then you can pick the best name for you.

As for hosting, I can offer you hosting through my company for the low price of $30/month. If you have alternate hosting already in place, I can use that if they support WordPress. If you prefer to set up your own hosting, please let me know.  Learn more about my hosting ->

Step Five: Send in Your Logo, Images and Content to be Uploaded to the Site

If you want to include your logo, send me a high resolution image of it and I will upload and customize it so that it will fit nicely within the website’s header. If you don’t have a logo, we can use your company name in the header.

Most website templates have images displayed on the home page. You really want these images to represent you so, as mentioned above, take pictures of your workplace, employees at work, a group photo, etc. Pictures like these will make your business real and approachable to your potential clients. If you don’t want to take pictures, I can help you find stock images at a low cost.

At this point, I’ll ask you to send me your text content via email. This is the wording you want to appear on each page. You will provide the wording and I’ll upload it to your website. Each Basic Package includes up to five pages of content. The Standard Package includes up to 20 pages of content.

Step 6: Review and Approve Your New Website

Once I have everything from you, I’ll set it all up within WordPress and have you review the final project. Once you approve the changes, I’ll move your website to live and you’ll be online!

Step 7: Keeping Your Site Going Strong

A good website is never really finished and one of the biggest mistakes you can make with your website is thinking it is finished. Keeping your content up-to-date is critical and adding new and fresh content will keep people (and search engines) coming back for more.

In addition, you should always monitor your site for web server problems and back it up whenever changes are made. Viruses and spyware are easy to spread and you should monitor your site for these evils as well.

Finally, you will need to keep your domain registration information current and paid up so you do not lose your domain name.

Once the website is built and live, I will install Google Analytics and create an XML sitemap and notify the search engines that you are online. If you’re involved in social media, and I hope you are, I’ll integrate Facebook, Twitter, and other social media with your website to give you a complete presence on the web. (You will need to have your own accounts for social media.)

That’s it! I’ll do everything else. I’ve tried to make the process as easy as possible so you can concentrate on your business and I can concentrate on building your website.
